Our school has many different cultures represented. I thought it would be fun to explore Lunar New Year and increase awareness about the Asian celebration happening around the world during the first part of February. Students were surprised to learn that the date for the new year changes each year because it is based on the moon cycle and not on the same date each year like it is here. Lion dances enthralled everyone and the kinder & first graders got their bodies moving with their own interpretations of Lion Dances. Upper grade students participated in a class discussion (including revisiting phases of the moon cycle) and played a Gimkit online after reviewing all of the options on our Lunar New Year choice board.

Learning Targets:

I can be curious and ask questions about topics to me to drive my learning.

I can learn about other cultures to better understand global issues from a different point of view.
