Ramadan

Ramadan is the holy month of fasting for Muslims worldwide. At our school we have a small Muslim community and I thought it would be interesting to teach a lesson on Ramadan. Musician Cat Stevens has one of his songs, Ramadan Moon, in a cartoon video that explains the basics of Ramadan. Students really like his voice and songs anytime I play any of his work. Earlier in the year we did a lesson with the book Peace Train that he collaborated with illustrator Peter Reynolds. We talked about the customs celebrated during Ramadan and the kids were shocked to learn about fasting. They were also super excited to make the connection between Eid and Christmas...you get presents for both! Our Muslim students were excited to share their personal stories of celebrating Ramadan with their families.
